- *** Guided tours will begin on October 6th, 2010 ***
- Book at least three weeks in advance, if not months, and especially for guided tours as we receive a high volume of applications and may not be able to book every request.
- Request dates that you know you will have transportation available – cancellations slow down the booking process for all schools.
- Verify that your request does not conflict with any other dates including testing.
If you cancel, you must submit a new request as part of our first-come-first-serve policy
Preplanning Your Visit:
- All teachers from accredited California PreK-12 schools receive free admission to the Page Museum with their ID. We encourage your teachers to make a trip to our museum before visiting as a school group.
- Our experience has been that students get more out of their visit if they are familiar with how these asphalt “pits” formed, what types of plants and animals became trapped, and how scientists have used these fossil deposits to open a window into the prehistoric world. The museum offers a free 30-page book, Return to the Ice Age, as a download on our website as a support to our teachers at http://www.tarpits.org/education/teachers.html.
- Also new is "The Excavatrix," a frequently updated blog started by one of our excavators (http://excavatrix.blogspot.com/). About once a week new photos of the latest excavation finds are posted, as well as detailed explanations of excavation tricks and techniques. It's the best resource for the most up-to-date information on Project 23, as well as on the preparation of Zed, our nearly complete Columbian mammoth.
Self-guided tours for out-of-state schools are available at a reduced rate through Group Sales (phone: 323-857-6300 Ext. 107, or email:groupsalespa@tarpits.org). Guided tours for out-of-state schools groups of 10-25 persons are also available for an additional fee and may be also be arranged through Group Sales.
***LAUSD Schools must book through the district School Journeys office at (323) 342 - 1342.***
