La Brea Tar Pits provides self-guided field trips to California Pre K - 12 public or private school groups at no cost! Field trip reservations apply to groups of 10 or more students who attend an onsite, accredited academic institution at least three days a week.


Please complete this request form at least 1 week in advance of your visit. After completing this form, you will receive an email with receipt of your booking request. Please understand that submitting a field trip request is not confirmation of your reservation. Allow up to two weeks for us to process your request, book your group, and send your confirmation email. We appreciate your patience as we process your request.

Why don’t I qualify? The La Brea Tar Pits and Museum provides free field trips to Pre K - 12th grade groups from California accredited public schools, private schools, head start programs, child development centers, and non-profit organizations that provide academic instruction to students on a school site at least three days a week. The Tar Pits provides free admission for all students and teachers and up to one additional chaperone for every five students.
A minimum of 10 students is necessary to qualify for a school visit.

We require a minimum of one chaperone for every ten students, and cover up to one additional chaperone for every five students. Chaperones beyond the 1:5 ratio are still welcome, however, they will need to purchase a discounted $12.00 chaperone ticket upon arrival. Exceptions apply to Title I schools
Teachers include school administrative staff, teaching assistants, and one-to-one aides. Teachers will not be counted towards the 1:5 chaperone to student ratio and receive free admission.


Personal vehicle parking is available for $15 in the La Brea Tar Pits Parking Lot. Buses may park for free along Curson Ave.

The Museum is open daily from 9:30 am–5:00 pm. We always do our best to accommodate your preferred visit date. Be sure to check your school calendar to avoid any conflicts with holidays or in-service days. Scheduling multiple visits? Please submit separate request forms for each visit.

Explore a historic La Brea excavation, complete with real fossils still buried in asphalt! Housed in a newly renovated mid-century building, the Observation Pit will connect students of all grades to the past, present, and future of paleontology in Los Angeles. Located in Hancock Park.

This film experience will transport you to a world lost in time and ruled by giants. You'll encounter some of the Earth's most awe-inspiring mammals, from saber-toothed cats and dire wolves to giant sloths and iconic mammoths that lived 5,000 years before modern civilization. See how these magnificent creatures became trapped in asphalt, preserved in time, and are being unearthed today. Located in the School Programs Theater.
