La Brea Tar Pits provides self-guided field trips to California Pre K - 12 public or private school groups at no cost! Field trip reservations apply to groups of 10 or more students who attend an onsite, accredited academic institution at least three days a week.

Please understand that submitting a field trip request is not confirmation of your reservation. Why don’t I qualify? The Natural History Museum provides free field trips to Pre K - 12th grade groups from California accredited public schools, private schools, head start programs, child development centers, and non-profit organizations that provide academic instruction to students on a school site at least three days a week. The Tar Pits provides free admission for all students and teachers and up to one additional chaperone for every five students.
A minimum of 10 students is necessary to qualify for a school visit.
Schools bringing grades 6-12 are limited to 150 students per day.
Personal vehicle parking is available for $15 in the La Brea Tar Pits Parking Lot. Buses may park for free along Curson Ave.
The Museum is open daily from 9:30 am–5:00 pm. We always do our best to accommodate your preferred visit date. Be sure to check your school calendar to avoid any conflicts with holidays or in-service days. Scheduling multiple visits? Please submit separate request forms for each visit.
Turn your field trip into an adventure! Guided Programs, Performances, and Special Exhibits are free, optional additions for your trip and offer your students the unique opportunity to learn from our Museum educators. Add-on reservations are subject to availability and all outdoor programs/exhibits are weather-dependent. We recommend you view all Field Trip Add-On offerings on our website prior to booking as dates for programming and exhibits vary.

Investigate the lives of ancient animals by looking at the clues they left behind — their fossils! Like a paleontologist, discover fossil specimens in our exhibits, discuss observations, and record ideas to take back to the classroom. Located in Dinosaur Hall or Age of Mammals.

This film experience will transport you to a world lost in time and ruled by giants. You'll encounter some of the Earth's most awe-inspiring mammals, from saber-toothed cats and dire wolves to giant sloths and iconic mammoths that lived 5,000 years before modern civilization. See how these magnificent creatures became trapped in asphalt, preserved in time, and are being unearthed today. Located in the School Programs Theater.
