On Homeschool Days, homeschoolers get free access to the museum all day! Explore the tar pits outside, view the collections inside the museum, and participate in special Homeschool Day programming.
Visit the Tar Pits on a day just for you!
The La Brea Tar Pits & Museum is proud to offer four days each school year when Homeschoolers can come free of charge! Each Homeschool Day has an assigned theme with free drop-in activities designed to help you and your students get the most out of our exhibits.
We collaborate with our sister museum, the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County, for a total of eight Homeschool Days each year, so check out their website for more information. We hope to see you at all eight!

Wednesday, October 17 – Super Sloths of the Pleistocene
Mammoths, camels and of course...sloths! Spend this Homeschool Day with the biggest mammals of the Ice Age. We’ll explore what life was like for these amazing herbivores in Pleistocene Los Angeles, and how their fossils give us clues about survival and extinction.
Friday, January 11 – Pleistocene Predators
Did you know that Ice Age Los Angeles was home to some of the most fearsome predators to ever walk the planet? Dire wolves, short faced bears, and saber-toothed cats all called this area home from 11 to 55 thousand years ago. This Homeschool Day will explore the lives of these amazing carnivores: how they hunted, what their social groups were like, and what we can learn from their fossil remains.
Tuesday, March 12 – Dig It!
This Homeschool Day, we are joining up with our Mobile Museums team to explore how archaeology and paleontology can help us uncover the mysteries of the past. Excavate aboard the Mobile Museums Archaeology Experience truck before touring the La Brea Tar Pits: the largest active urban paleontological site in the world.
Wednesday, June 5 – Astounding Adaptations
Everything on our planet shares one thing in common - we have adapted to our environment. This Homeschool Day gives you the opportunity to explore the diversity of life in Pleistocene Los Angeles and discover how our scientists use fossil evidence to learn how Ice Age animals survived. If you've ever wondered how a saber-toothed cat used its impressive canines to hunt, or why a Harlan's ground sloth had pebble-sized bones growing in its skin, don't miss out on this day!
